Apple's two late-October MacBook Pro announcements split the range in a way a simple chip-generation label cannot explain. The October 27 model pairs M6 with Liquid Retina XDR. The October 28 models combine M5 Pro or M5 Max with a touchscreen PROLED XDR panel. Both announcements list November 6 availability, still ahead of this November 4 assessment.
What the specifications separate
The announced US starting prices for the 14-inch versions are $1,999 for M6 and $2,899 for the PROLED M5 Pro model. That $900 difference also crosses computing tiers: M6 memory reaches 32GB, while the PROLED family offers configurations up to 128GB. Connectivity changes from Thunderbolt 4 on M6 to Thunderbolt 5 on the higher tier. This is therefore an imperfect display-price comparison.
NEXTECH analysis: buy for the constraint
Our preference is to identify the task that actually constrains a buyer before ranking these machines. If a project needs more memory than the base platform accommodates, a newer chip name does not remove that boundary. Conversely, an attractive display should not automatically decide a purchase for someone whose work is primarily text and external-monitor use. We would treat touch, panel characteristics and compute capacity as separate decisions, then ask which combination earns its cost in that person's regular workflow.
What testing still needs to establish
The unanswered questions are practical. We would compare sustained project completion times at matched memory capacities, inspect display behavior at different brightness settings, and observe whether touch improves representative creative tasks rather than merely adding another input method. None of those tests has been performed by NEXTECH. The launch documents establish the options and announced prices; they do not establish which configuration is best value for every user, or prove its performance in a reader's own applications.
